Music is so important to me in novels, especially in my own. I always write with songs in mind — either the song that would be playing in the movie soundtrack, or just a piece that highlights the mood of the moment.
The Love of Her Lives was a great one to make a Spotify playlist for. (You can also read corresponding posts about the playlists for my other books, The Love of My Other Life, and The Love I Could Have Had, and why I chose those songs for those books.)
For this third novel, I wanted to lean more pop, as well as into the universe/stars theme. The Love of Her Lives is even more multiversey (yep, that’s a word!) than the first two, with Millie’s journey across the multiverse in search of true love. So you’ll see a lot of those themes in this playlist.
The songs are in approximate order to the book scenes they relate to, so if you’ve read The Love of Her Lives, some of these will make a lot of sense! I won’t go through reasons for inclusion for all the songs, and some are obvious as they’re actually mentioned in the novel. But a couple of highlights to note here:
- Daydreaming by Harry Styles — chosen because of Millie’s what-if ponderings at the start
- Shouldn’t Be by Luke Chiang — works for either of Millie’s less-than-suitable romantic attachments near the beginning!
- Vampire by Olivia Rodriguez — this is definitely about Rufus, especially when Millie encounters him later in life
- Let’s Fall in Love For the Night by Finneas — refers to the night Millie spends with Evan in California
- Beyond by Leon Bridges — I imagine our romantic hero playing this to Millie at the end!
- Many of them are just the right vibe for the story — including Honesty by Pink Sweat$, Feel the Same by Millennium Club, Catch Me by JVKE, Speak Easy by Sarah Bethany, and Easily by Bruno Major. Some are less literal than others, in terms of my book’s events and themes!
